11/14/2019 · With a trailing stop loss order, say you have a $15 stock. You might establish a trailing stop loss order of 10% instead of a traditional stop loss order at, say, $13.50. If the stock goes up to $20, you will still use the 10% level. This makes your stop loss order effective at $18 (10% below $20). Say an investor believes a stock that is trading at 37 is about to break out to a new high at 40. He might put in a buy stop order at 40 or slightly above. If he's correct and the stock breaks out, his order becomes a market order at his stop buy price. This is useful if the stock moves to 41 or 42 within a matter of minutes, or even seconds. For instance, if you own a stock that is currently trading at $50 and the moving average is at $46, you should set your stop loss just below $46. Just as in the example above using the support method, you should set your stop loss just below the moving average to give the stock a little room to breathe.
